Open Hands Midway

Thanks for your participation in our August Lawn Party. We served around 400 people and gave approximately 300 school supply bags to children who attended as well as lots of clothing and household items. Our partners in this event were Open Cities Health Care, who provided free dental checks to about 50 children, Woodcrest Church, who provided all the activities for children, and St. Luke Lutheran of Cottage Grove, who brought a sanctuary full of clothing and other items they collected for this event. Thank you for your willingness to participate and be the hands and feet of Christ ot our neighbors in need!!

Open Hands Midway Inc. was organized in May, 2009 and granted non-profit status in September. This outreach ministry of Bethlehem Lutheran Church in-the-Midway was organized to engage the Hamline-Midway neighborhood with open hands to meet the physical and emotional needs of the poor and disenfranchised. The core values of this ministry are:

          •    Everyone is welcome

          •    Love changes people

          •    Everyone has gifts to share

          •    All things are possible

Because of our unique location at the crossroads of University and Snelling Avenues in Saint Paul, we have a wonderful opportunity to share resources that have been donated to us by our own members and through our partners at 14 other local churches.

We serve a meal each Monday from 12:00-2 pm.

During 2009, Open Hands Midway has served over 11,000 meals and distributed over 2,500 bags of clothes, 500 blankets, 850 coats, as well as furniture and household items at our Monday Meals, Street Ministry on the third Saturday of the month, two Lawn Parties in the summer, and special events like the Thanksgiving meal and Christmas Party. Since September, the Emergency Food Shelf has served 75 families with 1700 pounds of food.

We need people to help serve on Mondays at our Monday Meals.
We also need men’s clothing, gloves, socks and shoes as well as gas and bus passes.

We could also use tall garbage bags and plastic bags (Cub or Rainbow) or Grocery bags.
